Trimming is what keeps trees off your roof
Nearly every wind failure we clean up in this city was visible months earlier. A canopy that has never been thinned acts like a sail. Deadwood that has been sitting up there for two seasons is the first thing to come loose. A limb growing straight out over the patio cover gets heavier every year until the union at the trunk splits.
Trimming fixes all three, and it is the cheapest tree work you will ever buy compared to what a fallen limb costs. The best time to do it here is late summer through early fall, so the tree is opened up before the first real Santa Ana comes through.
What we actually do up there
- Deadwood removal. Everything dead, broken, or hanging comes out first. On drought-stressed trees this alone can be half the job.
- Crown thinning. Selective cuts that let wind pass through the canopy instead of pushing against it, without stripping the interior bare.
- Structural pruning. Taking out crossing limbs, tight V-shaped unions, and competing leaders before they become a split trunk.
- Clearance pruning. Off the roof, off the block wall, out of the neighbor's yard, up over the driveway so the truck fits.
- Crown raising. Lifting the lower limbs so you get sight lines, light on the lawn, and headroom on the walkway.
We do not top trees. Cutting the top off a tree makes it look tidy for one season and then pushes out a mass of weak, fast shoots attached to nothing but bark. Topped trees fail more, not less, and they never regain their shape. If someone quoted you a cheap "top it off," that is why we are more expensive and worth it.
Different trees, different schedules
Sweetgums want thinning and deadwood work every two to three years, and homeowners usually ask about the spiky seed balls too. Trimming cuts the crop down but does not stop it.
Ficus grows back aggressively and needs a real plan rather than an annual shearing. Left alone it becomes top-heavy and catches wind badly.
Jacaranda and carrotwood are brittle, drop constant litter, and are best kept lighter than you would think, especially over a driveway.
Eucalyptus and Aleppo pine are the tall ones. They need an eye on them yearly, particularly for borer damage and for limbs that die back in a hot dry stretch.
Palms are their own trade with their own tools and their own disease risk. If you have fan palms and queens in the same yard, we can handle both on one visit and price it together.
Clean cuts, clean yard
Cuts are made at the branch collar so the tree can seal them, we do not leave stubs, and we do not paint wounds. All brush is chipped at the curb, the driveway and sidewalk get blown down, and we leave with everything we cut.
Sometimes the honest answer after we look at a tree is that trimming will not save it, and that the tree is past the point of saving. We would rather tell you that than sell you a trim you will pay for twice. And if a limb comes down overnight before we get to you, call the same number and we will respond.
